#TTOTW (Ted Talk of the Week) - David Logan on Tribal Leadership.
It’s really unfortunate that Logan has to use the over-used term “tribes” but that aside, there’s some really good content in here. The Big Idea: There are five stages of tribes… starting from Tribe Stage 1: Brute Survival of Scarce Resources and evolving to Tribe Stage 5: Enlightened Abundance for All. Think Maslow’s hierarchy overlayed with the trendy concept of tribes. Cool, but not terribly ground-shaking for me.
But here’s the juicy concept for me: (1) Leaders need to be able to resonate with ALL levels of tribes. Tribes can only hear on level above or below where they are - a leader understand this and doesn’t shut out levels that are not the same as hers. (2) And after that connection is established… Leaders don’t leave their tribes where they were - they nudge people to the next stage (whatever that next stage may be).
